Visual Arts

St. Sebastian’s Visual Arts program offers instruction in Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Digital & Wet Lab Photography. This program fosters enthusiasm, bolsters appreciation and promotes genuine artistic exploration.

Beginning in the Middle School, students are introduced to a variety of clay forming, handbuilding with slabs and coils, the pottery wheel, principles of design and color theory. As Upper School students, an aspiring artist has the choice to develop a foundation in one of the disciplines and if he so chooses, pursue advanced study. Art Club & Photo Club meet nearly each day all year and is welcome to students of all ages. The clubs create opportunities for artists to work with dedicated teachers on projects or have supervised access to the facility to pursue their own composition. Student artwork is routinely entered into regional and national competition and exhibited on campus throughout the school year.

Field Trips & Guests

Art Club frequently attends art lectures, local galleries and area museums including the Harvard Art Museums, Peabody Essex Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Guest Artists visit campus to share their artistic journey and provide on-site instruction. Most recently, students have participated annually in an off-campus raku workshop where they are able to apply ancient Japanese firing methods to their own handmade ceramic art.

Visual Arts & Service

Sharing and promoting our love of art is an integral part of the Visual Arts program at St. Sebastian’s. Inspired by the mission of the school, the Visual Art program aims to create opportunities to “take good care of one another” through art. In recent years, artists have volunteered their time to create murals at the Italian Home for Children and participate in The Memory Project, a program which pairs artists with orphans from around the world. Students create a portrait of an orphan and send the work of art to the child along with fund-raised donations as a gift. Novice and experienced students alike participate to create hundreds of portraits. In doing so, they are utilizing their artistic prowess to serve children in need.
