Varsity Skiing
OVERVIEW
The mission of Arrows Skiing is to teach and guide students in Alpine Ski Racing. No prior racing experience is required to join the team; however, this is a competitive team with an intense racing focus. Participants must have their own Alpine Skiing Equipment and safety helmet (no Snowboard Competition is held in the ISL NEPSAC Ski League). On-Mountain Training takes place at both Blue Hills Ski Area and Nashoba Valley Ski Area, weather permitting, three times a week. Races are held each Wednesday from 3pm-5pm at Nashoba Valley. Participants should anticipate dry-land training once a week.
The St. Sebastian’s Alpine Ski Team began in the 1993-1994 season under the leadership and enthusiasm of Coach Fr. John Arens. The St. Sebastian’s Team competed in the Ski East League, founded by the Rynne Family. During this time, St. Sebastian’s won the title as the top Boys Team and had outstanding top finishes. In 2002-2003 Coach Deirdre Rynne Annan was passed the torch, and the team travelled extensively, gaining notable standing within the competitive Ski East League as a team. Will Barnard ’12 earned a ranking as the top Ski East All-Star Snowboarder.
In 2009, St. Sebastian’s was granted space in the ISL NEPSAC Ski League and Varsity status as a team. Arrows Skiing has been awarded individual All-Scholastic Ski Awards. In recent years, Arrows Skiing made history by winning three consecutive NEPSAC titles. In 2014, Richard Arms ’14 and Henry Finnegan ‘14 led Arrows Skiing to their first ever NEPSAC Championship title in Class C. The following year, led by Seve Mustone '15 and Doyle Sylvia '15, Arrows Skiing defended their NEPSAC Class C title. The season concluded with a 3rd place finish in the ISL. In 2016, Arrows Skiing moved to Class B and won with top performances from Christopher Golden ’21, Peter Murphy ’18 and Peter Rowe ’17.
