The golf program at St. Sebastian’s School strives earnestly to provide each member with an enjoyable, rewarding and fulfilling experience where every golfer grows in his ability to play the game and understand the game in a competitive environment. The emphasis is not only on improving one's skill level in the game of golf, but also there is a strong emphasis on the number one rule in golf: “play the game in a spirit of integrity and respect for others.” All this is done in an atmosphere consistent with the beliefs of our school: to love God, work hard, and take good care of one another.
Here is a snapshot view of the spring golf program at St. Sebastian’s School: We field both a varsity and junior varsity team. Students in grades 7 – 12 are eligible to try out for a team. Most years there is a spot for everyone interested in playing golf. On a rare occasion, depending on the number of candidates trying out, there is the need to limit team membership to approximately 12 players on each team. This is due to both transportation issues and course availability. If that occurs, then we try to seek other opportunities for a student, such as using our golf simulator during physical education time. We play and practice at quite a few courses: Blue Hill Country Club, Brae Burn Country Club, Charles River Country Club, and Ponkapoag Golf Course. As a member of the prestigious Independent School League, we are most fortunate to play matches at several select golf clubs in the greater Boston area: Belmont Country Club, Renaissance Golf Club, Wollaston Golf Club, Dedham Country Club, Nashawtuc Country Club, Newport National Golf Club, and Kittansett Golf Club.
First and foremost, we have been blessed with very talented young gentleman in our golf program. Our team has enjoyed tremendous success over the past 10-plus years. This success reached a high-point with the capture of four consecutive league titles from 2016 through 2019. During this amazing run, the team compiled an outstanding 67-1-2 record in league play.
St. Sebastian’s golfers have consistently earned All-League recognition: 2015- Alejandro Soto and Robert Lemone; 2016- Andrew Michienzi, Andrew Giacchetto and Alejandro Soto (4-time recipient); 2017- Andrew Michienzi and Andrew Giacchetto; 2018- Andrew Giacchetto and Mario Oliva; 2019- Andrew Michienzi (3-time recipient) and Andrew Giacchetto (4-time recipient). Additionally, Andrew Giacchetto captured the ISL Tournament Champion Cup in 2017 and league MVP honors in 2018. In 2022, Matt Williams won the Patty Whitney Award for shooting the individual low at the ISL Kingman Cup tournament and was also the recipient of the ISL League MVP award.
Many St. Sebastian’s graduates have gone on to play collegiate golf. Most recently are Matt Williams at Holy Cross, Sean Deale at Fairfield, Taylor Peck at Princeton, Robbie Donahoe at Middlebury, Peter Cahill at Holy Cross, Joe Bergeron at Trinity, Connor McGuirk at Holy Cross (captain), Alejandro Soto at Colgate, and Andrew Giacchetto at the University of Indiana.
