Varsity Golf
OVERVIEW
PHILOSOPHY
The golf program at St. Sebastian’s School strives earnestly to provide each member with an enjoyable, rewarding and fulfilling experience where every golfer grows in his ability to play the game and understand the game in a competitive environment. The emphasis is not only on improving one's skill level in the game of golf, but also there is a strong emphasis on the number one rule in golf: “play the game in a spirit of integrity and respect for others.” All this is done in an atmosphere consistent with the beliefs of our school: to love God, work hard, and take good care of one another.
PROGRAM
Here is a snapshot view of the spring golf program at St. Sebastian’s School: We field both a varsity and junior varsity team. Students in grades 7 – 12 are eligible to try out for a team. Most years there is a spot for everyone interested in playing golf. The varsity team fields 10 players, and we are usually able to involve the rest of the players interested by having them on the JV team. On a rare occasion, depending on the number of candidates trying out, there is the need to limit membership on the JV team. This is due to both transportation issues and course availability. If that occurs, then we try to seek other opportunities for a student such as using our golf simulator during physical education time. The varsity team practices at Needham Golf Club, and the JV team practices and hosts matches at Ponkapoag Golf Club. The varsity team plays home matches at quite a few different courses depending on the year: Charles River Country Club, Dedham Country and Polo Club, and Needham Golf Club. As a member of the prestigious Independent School League, we are most fortunate to play matches at several select golf clubs in the greater Boston area: Belmont Country Club, Renaissance Golf Club, Wollaston Golf Club, Pine Brook Country Club, Newport Country Club, and Kittansett Golf Club.

First and foremost, we have been blessed with very talented young gentleman in our golf program. Our team has enjoyed tremendous success over the past 10-plus years. This success reached a high-point with the capture of four consecutive league titles from 2016 through 2019. During this amazing run, the team compiled an outstanding 67-1-2 record in league play.
St. Sebastian’s golfers have consistently earned All-League recognition: 2015- Alejandro Soto and Robert Lemone; 2016- Andrew Michienzi, Andrew Giacchetto and Alejandro Soto (4-time recipient); 2017- Andrew Michienzi and Andrew Giacchetto; 2018- Andrew Giacchetto and Mario Oliva; 2019- Andrew Michienzi (3-time recipient) and Andrew Giacchetto (4-time recipient).
