Golf- Varsity

The Philosophy

The golf program at St. Sebastian’s seeks to advance the mission of the School by helping each student to grow in body, mind, and spirit. In addition to the development of golf skills, the coaches seek to help players practice good etiquette and deepen their respect for the game.

The Program

The golf team consists of a varsity squad, which plays 18 league matches and a few nonleague matches, and a junior varsity squad that plays 6-8 matches and also practices each week at Ponkapoag Golf Club. This ensures that every member of the team gets a chance to play competitive golf. The team is fortunate to play some of its varsity home matches at Charles River Country Club. As a member of the prestigious Independent School League, the team plays its away matches at some of the finest courses in New England, including Concord Country Club, Dedham Country & Polo, The Kittansett Club, Newport National Golf Club, Belmont Country Club, Renaissance Golf Club and Milton Hoosic Club.

Since 1993 the St. Sebastian’s Varsity Golf Team has won an impressive 6 league championships: 1993, 1994, 1996, 2009, and 2010 and 2016. In 2004 and 2005, Brendan Mahoney was selected as the Independent School League’s MVP. He also earned All-League honors in 2002 and 2003. In 2009, junior Taylor Peck earned ISL MVP honors, and in 2010 he and co-captain Robbie Donahoe led St. Sebastian's to an undefeated and untied league record. In 2016, led by tri-captains Alejo Soto, Robert Lemone and Peter Mullin, the Arrows captured the prestigious ISL Golf Championship with an undefeated but once tied league record of 17-0-1.

St. Sebastian’s golfers consistently earn All-League recognition. In 2015 both Alejandro Soto and Robert Lemone earned such distinction. In 2016 the trio of Andrew Michienzi, Andrew Giacchetto and Alejo Soto earned All-League honor. Alejandro Soto has earned this distinction 4 out of the last 5 years.

Alumni

Many St. Sebastian’s graduates have gone on to play collegiate golf. Most recently are Sean Deale at Fairfield, Taylor Peck at Princeton, Robbie Donahoe at Middlebury, Peter Cahill at Holy Cross, Joe Bergeron at Trinity, Connor McGuirk at Holy Cross (captain) and Alejo Soto at Colgate.

Great double victory today for Arrow golfers. Ted Murphy. Michael Walsh, Juan Oliva, Mark Heffernan, and Mark Wilson all found the winners circle to carry the team to two important victories. Although captains Giachetto and Michienzi faced extremely strong opposition and narrowly missed winning their matches at the 1 and 2 positions respectively they never faulted from the main goal, to lead the team to victory and that they did.
