On October 16, St. Sebastian’s honored Jack Doherty ’62, P’86,’87, GP’17,’25, long-time Business Manager and former hockey coach, for his 42 years of eminently distinguished service to his beloved School. The day began with classmates, teammates, and players joining Jack on the 50-yard line for the ceremonial coin toss before the cheering Homecoming throng.
Family and friends returned to campus that evening for a special retirement celebration. Fr. John Arens offered grace before dinner in the West Campus Center. Headmaster Bill Burke greeted those assembled with a warm welcome and heartfelt expressions of gratitude, awe, and love. After a fabulous video featuring Jack’s classmates, his teammates, his former players, current and past trustees, current and past colleagues, and family members, guests were treated to live tributes from: David Gately ’73, former President of the Board of Trustees; Rob Wadsworth P’10,’15, former Chair of the Finance Committee; Ann Rourke P’15,’20, Jack’s niece; and Tim Doherty ’87, P’17, Jack's son who serves as a Trustee.
Current hockey coaches, Sean McCann and Jack’s son, Jed Doherty ’86 P’25, and varsity hockey captains Brendan Gorman ’22 and Will Elias ’22 presented Jack with his #11 jersey. Headmaster Burke announced that for the first time in our School’s history we are retiring an athletic uniform number. No St. Sebastian’s varsity hockey player will ever again wear #11.
Jack donned the #11 home jersey, took to the podium, and told his story of happily entering St. Sebastian’s as a 7th grader in 1956, passionately pursuing the Business Manager position 42 years ago, and devoutly loving his graced time at his wonderful School. Headmaster Burke then spoke of Jack’s off-the-charts ability, over-the-top devotion, world-class vision, and a host of other gifts and blessings which have conspired to transform St. Sebastian’s School beyond measure.
In addition to having his number retired, the business office, through a gift made by Jay & Carol LaMarche P`91,`93, was named the Doherty Business Office on May 1, 2019 in recognition of his 40 years of distinguished service to St. Sebastian’s.
Rev. Kenneth Sicard, O.P., President of Providence College (Jack’s alma mater) and a St. Sebastian’s Trustee, closed the evening with a special blessing for Jack and his family.
We will never be able to thank Jack enough for ALL he has done and will continue to do for the School he loves with all his heart.
