Matt Duffy Named ISL Baseball Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Matt Duffy ’07, who was named ISL Coach of the Year following an incredible inaugural season as Varsity Baseball Head Coach. After serving in a volunteer/assistant role the prior two seasons, Duffy took the helm this spring, leading the Arrows to an ISL championship and a 10-1 regular season ISL record, capped off with a 13-1 total record and a perfect 3-0 run in the playoffs.

With his extensive baseball background, it’s no surprise that Duffy helped his team secure the ISL Championship for the first time since 2018. At St. Sebastian’s, Duffy was a key player for the Arrows, where he earned two All-League certificates, served as captain and was named the League MVP during his senior year, and helped to seal the 2007 ISL Baseball Championship by pitching a complete game in the 3-0 win over Roxbury Latin. He went on to play at the University of Vermont and the University of Tennessee where his impressive play caught the eyes of MLB scouts. Drafted by the Houston Astros in 2011, he began to rise through the ranks in the minor leagues, before making his MLB debut in 2015 with Houston. Toward the end of his professional career, Duffy had the opportunity to play ball in the Japan Pacific League (currently the Nippon Professional Baseball League.) 

Athletic Director Jon Bartlett had his own words of praise for Duffy: "I'm so happy for Coach Duffy on his ISL Coach of the Year Honors. Even though he would be the last person to take credit for the ISL Championship season, I know I speak for the players when I say he is absolutely deserving of this award. He had the team prepared and ready to compete in each game."
