Noah Welch '01 and Noah Hanifin '15 continue to make St. Sebastian's proud. Welch will be skating on the USA Hockey team in South Korea this February at the Winter Olympics. Hanifin has made the NHL All Star team and will compete in the All Star game in Tampa Bay, FL, on January 28.
Hanifin, a Norwood native, was selected in the 1st Round of the NHL Draft on June 26, 2015. He was the 5th person in the world selected and the first defenseman. As a member of the Carolina Hurricanes, Hanifin has 72 career points and has emerged as a rising star in the league.
Welch, also a defenseman, was drafted 54th overall in the 2nd round of the 2001 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. At St. Sebastian's, Welch captained the 2000-01 team that achieved a 29-1-1 record en route to ISL Keller Division and New England Prep School Division I Championships. He was the captain of the Harvard University team and an All-American. He made his NHL debut toward the end of the 2005-2006 season. Welch played for a few teams in the NHL before signing a contract to join a team in the Swedish Elite League (SEL). He won the SEL Championship in 2015 as a member of the Växjö Lakers and was named the MVP of the playoffs.
"Both Noah's are gifted athletes and world class leaders of faith and honor. We could not be more proud of or more happy for them," remarked Headmaster Bill Burke.
Congratulations to Welch and Hanifin. Good luck on the ice!
