US Army Captain (Ret.) Andrew Maxwell '06 Speaks at Veterans Day Assembly

On Friday, November 12, 2021, St. Sebastian's was delighted to welcome home US Army Captain (Ret.) Andrew Maxwell '06 to deliver his Veterans Day Speech. Each year the School invites a speaker with a significant connection to our military to address assembled students and faculty on this very meaningful and important topic during the week of Veterans Day.

Andrew began by outlining his distinguished career in the military, beginning with his matriculation from St. Sebastian's to the United States Military Academy at West Point and his commission as a 2nd Lt. upon graduation. From there he described his deployments to the Middle East and his entry into US Special Forces where he became a Green Beret.

Andrew described St. Sebastian's as his true alma mater and shared his fond memories of athletic competition on our fields which he termed "fields of friendly strife." He then turned to the main focus of his speech where he offered some reflections on the topics of teamwork and leadership. Defining a team as any group of individuals striving to reach a common goal, he used his experiences as a military commander to help students to see and to sharpen their own contributions to any teams to which they belong.

Defining leadership as talent management, he reminded students that one day they will be called upon to serve in a leadership role, where they should focus on managing systems and processes, but leading people, which requires accountability, trust, and reliance on one another.

St. Sebastian's was blessed and proud to welcome Capt. Maxwell home and appreciated and admired all that he has accomplished in generous service to our nation.
