On November 1, St. Sebastian's held its annual Unity Day, increasing our student body awareness and understanding of individuals living with disabilities. Aaron Golub, the first legally blind division one athlete to play in a game, served as keynote speaker, and several faculty and alumni were invited to speak about their loved ones living with disabilities. The purpose of this annual school tradition is to heighten our awareness of every person’s dignity and to strengthen the bonds that unite us so that all may grow in our capacity and resolve to know, to love, and to serve God and neighbor.
Golub's message was one of grit, determination, and effort. It was as a member of Tulane University's football team that he became the first legally blind division one athlete to play in a game and was ultimately named a team captain in his senior year. Golub went on to become an NFL free agent and is now an entrepreneur, a professional speaker, and a consultant. Golub noted in his presentation to the students that many people have limitations, adversities, and challenges in life, but that these limitations don't define them. He emphasized the importance of perspective in finding gratitude and making it easier to overcome adversity. As a powerful demonstration of his disability, Golub invited three students to wear a pair of goggles that simulated his eyesight while trying to catch a tennis ball that was thrown to them, with each of them finding it difficult.
Following the presentation in Ward Hall, students gathered in small discussion groups led by Peer Educators and MPA members. Unity Day concluded with an inspiring Alumni and Faculty Panel featuring photography teacher Courtney Bent, English teacher Nick Connelly ’17, Zachary Chambers ’14, and recent graduate Jack Connors ’24. Each panelist shared personal stories about living and working alongside individuals with disabilities, expressing gratitude for how these relationships have enriched their lives. A powerful takeaway from the day was the reminder to treat all people, regardless of ability, with the same respect and kindness we show to anyone.
