During the Assembly, Director of Athletics Jon Bartlett delivered the following remarks:
Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Nerbonne, Fr. Arens, Faculty and Staff, Students of St Sebastian’s: Welcome to the 2025 Spring Athletic Awards Assembly.
As I always do, a few Thank you’s to begin our Assembly: Thank you to the Athletic Department: our Athletic Scheduler, Mr. Matt Duffy. Trainers Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Carpino. And to our Equipment Manager and Strength Coach, Mr. Carr. Our IT Dept, in particular Paul Rossini, getting Livestream prepared each week. Our Security, Rob and Robin. And to our Facilities Team, in particular Paul, Doug and Francisco, for all their behind-the-scenes help.
Let me tell you, it is an honor following two legendary men, Mr. Chambers and Fr. Arens, men who have committed 73 years of service to St. Sebastian’s.
The other night at the MPA Banquet, Mr. Chambers talked about many things, but one topic he shared was what it means to become a man.
And I thought, relating his talk to our time here at St. Sebastian’s, when you arrive as a 7th grader, and matriculate through to your senior year. What happens? You learn how to become a man. And it is men like these two gentlemen, who have dedicated their lives for years to the young men at this school.
It is also the men and women who are your teacher-coaches, from Grade 7-12, who help guide you along the journey, giving you advice as an athlete and as a young man, to prepare you, to understand the man in today’ s world, and not just being a man, but a man of character. All these coaches have stayed in education to serve others. Coaches like Steve Dagdigian, who is retiring this year after serving this community for three decades. Thank you, Didge.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”.
When you face difficulty in life, which you will, how you respond to conflict is similar to how you respond in a tense game – which is why sport is so often compared to life, and why character coaches, like our St. Seb's coaches, are so important to your lives.
Your athletic season is a microcosm of the emotions you will face in life. So, appreciate what these coaches do for you, as they guide you to adulthood.
For our athletes. I am continually amazed at your approach and how you represent the school. Day in and day out, your compete level makes us proud. We are so lucky to have you represent us. Your effort and approach make our school one of the top programs in the ISL every season of every year. This spring was no different, as all of our varsity teams exampled excellence. You represent the school, and you do it with such great school pride. We appreciate you.
And with that theme, Our appreciation of you the athletes, and spring coaches. Giving of your time and energy. Your spring season may be short, but let’s face it, you prepared all year for this. Off-season training, out of season leagues, miles in the car. All to represent St. Seb's.
We appreciate you.
Voltaire said: “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others, belong to us as well.”
We are all in this together. The entire school experienced the joys and sorrows with you, because we appreciate you.
Our younger athletes should always learn from our varsity athletes, so that tradition will continue. And ask yourself, when it is my time to wear the varsity uniform, how much will I prepare myself to make sure we continue the tradition of excellence.
And this is why at this point, I would publicly like to thank all of our senior athletes, for their great career, and their leadership abilities. To use Mr. Sullivan’s word of the year, we witnessed your great triumphs over your career, and your never quit attitude. You have established a great legacy and a very high bar. Thank you, seniors.
So now let us recognize our Spring Varsity athletes, to celebrate their Spring Season...
Before I bring up our Head of School, Mr. Sullivan, I would like to recognize a Fan of The Year Award. This year we want to recognize someone who can be seen at most games and was the Arrows #1 Super Fan. He always is rooting for you, keeping his Rosary tightly in his palm, praying to St. Sebastian’s. Help me recognize Fr. John Arens as the Fan of the Year.
