This past weekend marked the return of ISL action for the first time since the winter of 2020. It was great to see St. Sebastian’s teams back in action on the fields and trails. Here is a recap of our first full weekend of play:
The varsity soccer team got things going on Thursday afternoon with a thrilling 2-1 victory over perennial league power Nobles. Both teams bent but did not break in the first half and at the intermission the score was tied at 0-0. In the second half, Nobles was rewarded with a PK which was put home by Nathan Szpak to put them up 1-0. The Arrows fought back equalizing the score at 1-1 when a scramble ensued after an initial Sebs’ shot hit the cross bar, finally being put home by Matt Malloy ‘23. Sebs scored in the 88th when Oliver O’Donnell ‘23 hit a great half volley from the top of the box for the decisive score. A huge shout out and thank you to the fans on the day; what an incredible scene!
Up at Brooks on Saturday, the cross-country team kept the winning ways going with a commanding 21-36 victory. Jack Conners ’24 took home the medalist honors with a brilliant run of 18:33. Co-captain Sam Hinman ’23 completed the Sebs 1-2 finish a strong second place finish. Hans Vigener ’22 (4th), Will Hansen ’23 (6th), and Thomas Scordino ’22 (8th) rounded out the Arrows scorers.
The football team competed valiantly, but ultimately fell to Governors Academy 15-9. The Arrows took a 9-7 fourth quarter lead behind a 27-yard field goal from Joe Sylvester ’22 and a beautiful 65-yard touchdown throw from Braedan Donovan ’22 to Aidan Maguire ’22. Govs answered to take the lead 15-9 with 5:30 to go. The Arrows nearly pulled out the last-minute victory, but the potential game winning drive stalled out on the one-yard line.
The St. Sebastian’s teams will be back in action this week with soccer at Rivers and BB&N, cross country at Nobles and football at Milton Academy. Go Arrows!
