Latin Club Trip to Holy Cross

Junior and senior members of St. Sebastian’s Latin Club recently traveled to Worcester to dine at the famed Wonder Bar Pizzeria and to attend a staging of Iphigenia at Holy Cross. This production, the inaugural at Holy Cross’ new Prior Performance Center, combined two plays of Euripides, Iphigenia at Aulis and Iphigenia Among the Taurians, with material from Homer’s Iliad.

The production described Iphigenia as “a young girl who sacrifices herself for a hollow and meaningless endeavor, the Trojan War, and becomes an embittered, murderous avenger who is miraculously redeemed by her love for her brother.” Moving the setting from the classical world to the latter half of the twentieth century, this rendition sought to explore “how the idealism of the young is exploited in pursuit of the cynical ends of their elders.”
