Jay Carroll P’22,’25 Presents to Finance Academy

On Wednesday, September 18th, Mr. Jay Carroll P’22,’25 presented to students in grades 7-12 at the St. Sebastian’s Finance Academy’s first meeting of the year. He spoke about his career as a Senior Portfolio Management Director and financial advisor at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.  

Mr. Carroll began his presentation by introducing his team of five people; Kate Hurley, Andrew Marks, Lisa Thors, and Chloe Griffiths; and explained what his company, Morgan Stanley, does on a day-to-day basis. He described the two main parts of the firm: investment banking and wealth management. He first explained investment banking and the role investment bankers play in the financial service industries. Mr. Carroll explained how investment bankers help companies raise money along with helping private companies become publicly traded companies.  

Mr. Carroll then discussed his role at Morgan Stanley in the wealth management sector. He described his role as a financial advisor, working with individual families to help them reach their objectives, while taking a value driven approach to serve the client. Mr. Carroll touched on why a family would work with a financial advisor. Financial advisors get to know the client and their finances and together build an investment plan tailored around goals, risk tolerance, and planning for major financial and life decisions.  

Mr. Carroll ended his presentation by explaining the wealth management capabilities at Morgan Stanley; traditional investments, alternative investments, insured solutions, lending and cash management, capital markets, and value-added services. Mr. Carroll’s presentation provided an insight into the inner workings of one of the largest Wall Street firms while also giving an idea of what it’s like to be a financial advisor.
