Engineering Club Hosts John Cardente of Dell EMC

On Tuesday, December 14th, the Engineering Club hosted its first meeting of the 2021-2022 academic year. The guest speaker, John Cardente, is a data science and AI technologist within the Chief Technology and Innovation Office of Dell EMC. He has been in the field for over 25 years and has worked on technologies including chip development, networking, OS software, file systems, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Mr. Cardente talked about his career path and how it was led by his own interests, reminding students that stressing about the future is often ineffective as our interests can and will change over time. Mr. Cardente then went on to share some of his work related to search engines, highlighting the technique of using natural language processing to connect similar topics so that users can more easily find what they are searching for. Mr. Cardente took time to share insights and advice he learned over his career as student, teammate, and project manager, emphasizing the importance of problem solving, critical thinking, and ‘deep work’, and inspiring students to discover their passions.
