On Monday November 27, students attended the Museum of African American History located in Beacon Hill, Boston. Led by Deirdre Rynne Annan and Trevor McLean, students were privately toured by the Museum Director, Mr. Christian Walkes. The tour began in the African Meeting House which is recognized as the oldest Black Church in the United States and concluded in the oldest public school, the Abiel Smith School established for education equality for Black students. Standing on the same floors as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, students learned about vital figures in Boston's history including leaders like Maria Stewart, David Walker and William Cooper Nell. Students concluded the visit with a walk to Hank William Thomas' "Embrace" sculpture and the August Saint-Gauden's "Shaw Memorial" to stand in the same spot that the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment of Black volunteer Union soldiers departed in May 1863. We will visit again this winter. If students are interested in attending, they should connect with Mrs. Annan.
