Arrows Participate in St. Paul's Debate Tournament

On Sunday, November 6, 2022, 12 members of the St. Sebastian's Debate Team participated in the St. Paul's School Invitational Debate Tournament.

This was a Cross-Examination Prepared Tournament on the following topic:

"Be it resolved that, while Ukraine's application for NATO membership is under consideration, the United States should increase both the types of weapons and the amounts of military aid to Ukraine."

Our students debated on either the affirmative or negative side of the resolution for three rounds in the Advanced and Novice Divisions.

Our Advanced Team consisted of Jonathan Demosthene '24 and Rui Do Rosario '24 arguing on the affirmative side of the resolution, and Raif Boit '24 on the negative side. Jonathan and Rui won their first two rounds, but lost the third by just one point, 165-164.

Congratulations to Raif who earned a prize for 3rd place out of 18 teams participating in the Advanced Division. His performance was all the more impressive because he had to debate solo in what is normally a team competition (known in debate parlance as an "iron man").

The following Independent Schools competed in the Tournament:

Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols School

Groton School

Northfield Mt. Hermon School

Phillips Exeter Academy

Roxbury Latin School

St. Paul's School

St. Sebastian's School

Winsor School
