On Sunday, February 9, members of the St. Sebastian's Debate Team traveled to Kingswood Oxford School for their Annual Invitational Public Speaking Competition held under the auspices of the Debating Association of New England Independent Schools. Alessandro Barbiellini '21 placed first in the Impromptu Speaking Competition in a field of over fifty speakers from nine independent schools.
In the Impromptu Speaking Competition speakers draw a card with three topics, which may be words, quotations or phrases not related to current events. The speaker then has two minutes to prepare a speech on one of these topics. He may take notes, but these may not be used during the speech. The speaker then must speak on the topic for three to five minutes. Judges in this category look for agility of thought, organizational ability, development and use of the topic and above all, the ability of the speaker to communicate with originality and style.
Advanced debaters from the following schools competed in the Tournament:
Buckingham Browne & Nichols School
Choate Rosemary Hall
Kingswood Oxford School
Northfield Mt. Hermon School
Roxbury Latin School
Stoneleigh Burnham School
St. Sebastian's School
