St. Sebastian's School held a Foreign Language Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Sean Albertson gave the following remarks at the ceremony:
St. Sebastian’s went to Rome this past March. We saw the Pope and St. Peter’s, we walked along the Forum’s Via Sacra and entered the Colosseum, we marveled at the faith of the saints and martyrs and the artisans that created church after beautiful church, and we ate—all the gelato and pasta carbonara we could hope for. And we also brought our Latin with us.
Yet, I didn’t say St. Sebastain’s Latin students went to Rome. I said St. Sebastian’s did—because, of the 16 Arrows, 9 were students of Latin or Greek and 7 were students of Spanish. Yet, somehow, we all brought our Latin with us. That’s because we share it in our faith and in our worship here and in the chapel.
You see—our first morning in Rome, we had decided to attend a Mass in Italian at St. Peters. We figured between the Spanish and Latin we knew, everyone could work their way through the Mass’ readings and prayers. The Mass was set to be celebrated in the basilica at St. Peter’s chair—right behind the main altar and the famous baldacchino.
And then the music started—“Attende, Domine. . .” and all the Arrows sang. Our local guide, Lucy, was astonished and wondered what sort of school we were that our students knew—and sang—that hymn with gusto. She would soon find out as our fellow Arrows exemplified reverence, awe, and gratitude each time we visited a church and took opportunities for prayer.
Though we arrived with Latin, we also were reminded to take some with us---to consider how we apply it on our own lives. The Swiss guard—the protectors of the Pope and Vatican City, those with the brightly colored uniforms, and those pikes with an axe and sharp point at the top, those whose patron saints are St. Martin and...you guessed it, St. Sebastian—have a cool Latin motto...ACRITER ET FIDELITER—FIERCELY AND FAITHFULLY. That’s how they defend the Pope—that’s their credo. If there was ever a phrase to tattoo---not on your chest, your forearm, or (God forbid!) your forehead—but rather on your heart, it’s ACRITER ET FIDELITER.
Yet, I think it’s already there in our pursuits of body, mind, and soul. And, if by chance, you’re feeling deficient—it’s a simple adjustment to pursue things fiercely and faithfully. As you might surmise, I view ACRITER ET FIDELITER as the way our students have pursued all things classical.
Consider last night’s Thespis Festus---Liam Cunjak, the driving force—and 16 students who volunteered to memorize and perform Latin passages. Consider the National Latin Exam results, the essay contest entered, the translation contest taken early one morning, that we pack a church for a Mass in Latin...and I think you would agree. ACRITER ET FIDELITER.
This, of course, happens with our talented faculty—Mr. Nerbonne, Mr. Stefan Cressotti, Mr. Ferguson, Mrs. Hinman, and Mr. Keady—all of whom model ACRITER ET FIDELITER in their love of teaching and their care for their students.
