2024 First Quarter Academic Awards

2024 First Quarter Academic Awards

At the Academic Awards Assembly on November 15, 2024, Assistant Headmaster Michael Nerbonne delivered the following remarks:

"Several years ago, while attending a debate tournament on the campus of St. Paul’s School, we were assembled at the end of the day in their Memorial Hall. In the lobby of this beautiful building, I read an inscription on a plaque which was placed there in the spring of 1951 on the occasion of its dedication. I have been so moved by the words of this dedicatory plaque that every fall while attending the annual debate tournament there, I find my way to this building just to read it again, which I did a little over a week ago. I wanted to share these words with you this morning on this occasion, just a few days after we have celebrated Veterans Day. The inscription reads:

“We are met here today to dedicate this building in honor of the boys of this school who served in the Second World War and in memory of those who gave their lives for their country…captains, commanders, lieutenants, pilots, seamen, privates in the ranks-they were boys here one day, and so in this beautiful place, in this quiet corner of New England ‘endlessly the dead go up and down’. Had we but eyes to see, we could trace their footsteps beneath these trees, along these shaded walks, among these gentle hills. Had we but ears to hear, we could detect the sound of their hurrying footsteps in the long corridors, of the catch of their oars across the water, of their skates over the black ice of the pond. Their faces have felt, as ours have felt, the touch of the soft snow aslant across the wide white fields; their feet have known the crackle of ice in the frozen ruts of the country roads. They are forever a part of the great brotherhood…. the thousands who have gone before, the thousands to come. They are a part of ourselves. Thinking of them, we pray God that, at long last, there will be peace, but if there is not peace, may He grant to the sons of these men their devotion and high courage.”

This inscription eloquently and powerfully honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. And it does so by reminding us that that these men were once boys with common, every day, even routine human experiences before they were called to service. It also appropriately captures the beauty and tranquility of our country, which men and women have had to defend over successive generations. We know when we read or hear these words, that we truly have something worth defending in this nation and that these sacrifices were not made in vain.

On Monday, Veterans Day, eighth-grader Brendan Fleming sang an absolutely stirring rendition of our National Anthem and freshmanPatrick Dunn delivered an eloquent and moving address at the Needham Veterans Day Commemoration. Just like the plaque on the wall at St. Paul’s, Patrick’s words reminded all of us of the sacrifices necessary for the preservation of a free nation. Patrick shared the very moving story of his beloved grandfather, Commander Joseph P. Dunn, whom Patrick never met, because he was shot down over the South China Sea while he was serving our country as a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War. Commander Dunn’s body was never recovered.

Patrick also shared in his address the remarkable life and legacy of his grandmother, Maureen Dunn, who was the Co-Founder of the National League of Families of POWs and MIAs and dedicated her life on behalf of American military personnel captured or missing in action and their families. When Maureen passed away in 2013, one newspaper article noted her tireless effort on behalf of military families: “Her search for answers helped start a movement…Her efforts led to the return of the remains of hundreds of American servicemen who died in Vietnam and in other wars.”

Patrick concluded his beautiful speech with these words, addressed particularly to the veterans in the audience: “I have grown up knowing that my grandfather died serving our country, and I know how great it must be to have your parent or grandparent return from war, but I realize that does not always happen. My grandfather didn’t live past the age of 30. He wasn’t able to hear how grateful we are for him and his sacrifices, but I can thank all veterans who have made the greatest sacrifices and put your lives on the line for our country.”

I want to thank Brendan Fleming for his inspired singing, and Patrick Dunn for so eloquently capturing the essence of Veterans Day in his spectacular oration. May all of us seek and cherish the “devotion and high courage” of so many who have sacrificed for the preservation of liberty. Thank you and God bless."
