During the Assembly, Director of Athletics Jon Bartlett delivered the following remarks:

Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Nerbonne, and Fr. Boyle, Faculty and Staff, Students of St Sebastian’s:

Welcome to the 2026 Winter Athletic Awards Assembly.

First and foremost:  thank you to the members of the Athletic Department for everything you do: a group of committed and dedicated educators: Coach Duffy, Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr. Carpino, Coach Silipo, Coach Kurker and Coach Carr. A sincere thank you to our Facilities Department for getting our courts and rink ready, Paul, Doug, Francisco, Jared and Eric, Mrs. Joyce with Medical Clearances, Mr. Willey and Mr. D. Burke for their support in the Dean's Office. And of course, Rob and Robin – who make sure you get to where you need to be, in a safe way.

Reflections on the Winter Season:

On a Friday in January, while reviewing the weekend schedule with Athletic Scheduler, Coach Duffy, we confirmed 20 sporting events in a 24-hour window. It made me pause, as it reminded me yet again of the hours our coaches and athletes give… of yourselves…to represent this school. So a heartfelt and sincere, Thank You.

First to the coaches:

If you polled any pedestrian walking along the street of any major city, and asked them to name the Heisman Trophy winner from 4 years ago; who took home the Oscar Award that same year; who earned the Nobel Peace Prize that year; or who was the MVP of the World Series that same year, my guess is that most, if not all of those interviewed, would shrug their shoulders and say, “I don’t know.”

But if you asked these same individuals on the city street, if they could name any teacher or coach who had an impact in their lives, not just 4 years ago, but 24 years ago, they would recite 4-5 names immediately.

Plato said back in the 4th Century BC, “A nation will prosper to the degree that it honors its teachers”.

This is not to take away from those other award winners and the success that they achieved in their lives. It is more to reaffirm the impact that our teachers and coaches have on the lives of our students. Which is why, student-athletes, we want to make sure you understand how these coaches exemplify hard work and good character.

Today, we also celebrate and thank our Sebs winter student-athletes for how you compete and represent the school. Our Goal in the Department, or better yet, our Mission, the word Mr. Sullivan gave us for the school year, is always to be the model program in the ISL. And we see it out there with how you guys compete. I am so proud of watching our teams, at every level, play with a prideful tenacity. I hear it out there as well, from alumni, parents, even visiting team parents, on how impressed they are when watching you play.

So I want to personally thank you, winter athletes, for wearing our Sebs uniform. When you compete, you represent all of us.

I want to share some examples of our winter team's success and commitment to our values and mission as a Program:

  • Everyone knows about this season’s success for our Hockey Team, with their ISL Keller Championship. But also in the same year, winning the Mutch Cup, the Valicenti Cup, and the Travis Roy Cup. A clean sweep.
  • And for individual acts in Hockey that emphasized our mission.
    • A Varsity Hockey senior travelling 45 minutes back to campus on a Friday night after an away game, where the opposing school was only 5 minutes away from his home. But he wanted to be with his brothers back to school and show leadership as a captain.
    • Senior team members, including injured seniors and team managers, helped emphasize team first and exemplified leadership and teamwork to younger teammates.
  • Squash once again brought home hardware, placing 2nd in New England’s Class E.
    • Senior players ending their career with back-to-back tournament placing in a program that just went varsity a few years ago.
  • Wrestling having another tremendous season, which culminated with a win at Nationals, along with a senior earning an ISL Championship title.
    • And for our Wrestler competing at Nationals, 2 days before his first-round win, he is up in front of the school at Mass singing with the St. Sebastian's Schola. Well-rounded and involved athletes.
  • Skiing having enough snow this season to actually get all races in.
    • And as the host school for NEPSAC, our ski coaches and skiers giving much of their time to ensure that the event ran efficiently in NH. It is tough to know what goes on with a sport that competes off campus all season, but the school should know that these skiers represented the school in a magnificent way.
  • Basketball competing at a high level all season. This team was fun to watch because they played hard every possession – all year long, to the last game.

And it wasn’t just varsity basketball, I want to note 2 examples of how our younger hoopsters approached the concepts of team and sportsmanship:

  • It took a while for JV Hoops to get its first win, but once it happened, seeing the entire team, starters and reserves, celebrating, hugging one another with huge smiles…putting Team before self.
  • Witnessing a middle school level basketball player helping up a BH player he accidentally knocked down. I heard someone from the student section say, ‘Why is he helping a BH player up?’ But interesting parallel - didn’t we learn something similar in the Bible? The Good Samaritan, who helped an injured Jewish traveler, a rival to Samaritans in those days, off the ground, after many people passed him by without offering help. So good for our athlete who acted with sportsmanship.
  • And with that example, all players need to remember in sports, especially as we see an increase in hostility in sports, on the fields and in the stands, that showing good sportsmanship is not a weakness. It is a strength. You can still be a physically and mentally dominant player over your opponent, while showing character and class. You can have the best cheering section in the league without degrading an opponent.
  • And speaking of Henry’s and the #1 Fans. The turnout for the Elite 8 Game was incredible. seeing all Sebs students dressed in white, arms connected, singing “10,000 Reasons”. At Silent Night, packing the gym before Christmas Break.
  • These Sports Assemblies are always great for our younger athletes to understand who we are, and what it means to be a Sebs Varsity athlete, and that anytime you put the uniform on, you represent the school and our school’s values:
  • Let us enjoy this morning as we recognize the young men who proudly represented our school during the winter season.

Before we call up our Winter Varsity Coaches, I want to highlight that March is National Athletic Trainer Month. And with that, with all of the work they do for you, student-athletes, tending to your injuries and keeping you healthy, I would like to call up Kern Fitzgerald and Mike Carpino to receive an Appreciation Award.

Now on to winter sports, and we will go alphabetically...
