Honoring Championship Basketball Arrows

Honoring Championship Basketball Arrows

On Friday, January 30, prior to the varsity game against Belmont Hill, St. Sebastian’s welcomed back three members of the 1964 and 1965 NEPSAC Championship basketball teams, John Galligan ’65, Grady O’Malley ’65, and Connelly Akstens ’64. Under the leadership of Fr. Gilmartin, these teams compiled a combined 37-3 record over two years.

Head of School Brendan Sullivan highlighted the standard set by Fr. Gilmartin that carries on to this day. He believed that success would derive from intelligence, discipline, and character. His philosophy emphasized preparation, hard work, and above all, teamwork, developing not just better players, but better young men.

After St. Sebastian’s, Grady O’Malley ’65 attended Manhattan College in the heyday of New York City college basketball and was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1969 NBA draft. Grady stands as the only St. Sebastian’s alumnus to play in the NBA. It was great having these legendary Arrows back on campus!
