Kevin T. Mutch ’80 Memorial Golf Tournament Celebrates 33 Years of Impact

Members of the St. Sebastian’s community gathered at Brookmeadow Country Club on June 19 for the 33rd Annual Kevin T. Mutch ’80 Memorial Golf Tournament, a longstanding tradition that honors the life and legacy of Kevin T. Mutch ’80 while supporting the next generation of students.

A standout hockey player at St. Sebastian’s and later at Boston University, Kevin returned to his alma mater to coach during the 1991-92 season. His dedication, enthusiasm, and love for the game left a lasting impression on the St. Sebastian’s hockey program and the broader school community. Tragically, Kevin passed away in September 1992 while preparing for the upcoming hockey season.

In the years that followed, Kevin’s family, friends, teammates, and fellow alumni established the Kevin T. Mutch ’80 Memorial Golf Tournament as a way to honor his memory and continue the values he embodied. Together with the annual Mutch Cup Hockey Game, the tournament raises funds for the Kevin T. Mutch ’80 Scholarship Fund and supports other local charitable causes. 

Now in its 33rd year, the tournament remains a meaningful opportunity for alumni, parents, and friends of the School to come together in support of St. Sebastian’s students while celebrating the enduring impact of a beloved Arrow. The continued success of the event is a testament to the strength of the St. Sebastian’s community and its commitment to preserving Kevin’s legacy for future generations.

Will Haggerty ’27, recipient of the Kevin T. Mutch Award, delivered the following remarks:

It is an honor to be with you this morning, and thank you to everyone who was able to join us for this year’s golf tournament.

This past May I, along with my classmate Tommy Saulnier, received the Mutch Award at our Undergraduate Awards Assembly.

I was surprised to receive any award - so, to be honest with you, I didn’t know much about it. The award is described this way: The Kevin T. Mutch Award is given in memory of Kevin T. Mutch of the class of 1980, to a varsity athlete in the junior class who demonstrates leadership and school spirit.

I thought to myself - WHAT AN HONOR, but I had to do some digging to figure out what it meant to all of you. As I read and spoke to Tom, Kevin’s brother, I began to realize how much Kevin and this award means to the Mutch family.

I learned about Kevin’s incredible hockey careers at St. Sebastian’s and Boston University, and how he decided to return to St. Sebs as a coach.

It was clear how dedicated Kevin was to the brotherhood of St. Sebastian's.

I come from a great family but I am the only son. Growing up with two sisters, I never really understood the meaning of brotherhood until I attended St. Sebastian’s.

The brotherhood at Seb's shapes us into men. I can’t tell you how many times an alum, teacher, administrator has looked me in the eye and said, “Will, Once In, Never Out, Arrows Forever.”

Spending 12-14 hours a day with the same 60 kids in your grade allows you to grow closer to one another and build a super strong bond. I know some of these men will be my brothers for the rest of my life.

And I see no better example of this than Kevin’s brother, Tom.

He took time out of his busy schedule to present the award to me last month and when you speak to him, you know how important it is to him that his brother Kevin’s memory is kept alive.

What an amazing example he sets for me and all of my St. Sebastian’s brothers. And I now understand how proud the St. Sebs community is to be a part of this incredible legacy that continues to honor Kevin.

Thank you for supporting this wonderful event. Mr. Sullivan asked me to speak today so I’ll close with a line that he and Mr. Burke before him says to us frequently:

“Love God, Work Hard, Take Good Care of One Another.”
