Andrew Martin Speaks as Part of Visiting Writer Series

On Thursday, March 12, author Andrew Martin came to St. Sebastian’s as part of the Visiting Writer Series and spoke to our students about his novel Down Time, which came out on March 10th.

After the reading, Mr. Martin visited Mr. Sean Cleary's sophomore literature class, Mr. Dean Adams's AP Creative Writing class, and Mr. Jeff Riemann's junior literature class. Down Time is Mr. Martin's third book, following his first novel, Early Work, a New York Times Notable Book of 2018, and a collection of short stories titled Cool for America.

Mr. Martin lives, writes, teaches, and sets most of his writing in New York City; however, he read from sections of Down Time that are set in and around the Boston area, somewhere he called home for several years. In addition to his books, Mr. Martin is a prolific writer of literary criticism and essays, which allowed him to speak to classes from many sides of the literary world. Mr. Martin fielded questions about AI (to which he's vehemently opposed in the creative process), writer's block (which he, like our students, occasionally suffers from), and creating meaningful characters in fiction.
