A New Chapter for Arrows Hockey

After 32 years as assistant varsity hockey coach, Jed Doherty ’86 is stepping down from the role and passing it to fellow alumnus Danny O’Regan ’12. Jed will continue to teach history at St. Sebastian’s and remain an important member of our school community.

Jed’s connection to Arrows hockey runs deep. The son of Jack Doherty ’62, P’86,’87, GP’17,’25, the school’s longtime Business Manager and former hockey coach, Jed grew up around the program he would one day help lead. He became an Arrow in 1980 and, in June 1993, joined the faculty, beginning his 32-year tenure as assistant coach. "I am forever grateful to Jed and the Doherty family for all that they have done for our outstanding hockey program. I know that he will continue to be an incredible resource for the team and leader in the classroom," remarked Head of School Brendan Sullivan.

Over the years, Jed helped shape countless student-athletes and formed lasting bonds with his players, making a point of staying connected with them long after their time on Greendale Avenue. His tenure included two New England Championships and five ISL Championships, along with countless memories from a program that has sent dozens of players on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels.

“Jed is the ultimate connector of the Arrows hockey community across five decades and the primary reason our alumni remain so deeply connected to the program,” said Head Coach Sean McCann. “I am deeply grateful for his friendship, his unwavering support, and his commitment to doing what was best for our student-athletes. Jed won't be behind the bench this year, but he will always be a cornerstone of this team.”

Danny takes on the role of assistant varsity hockey coach following a standout hockey career. A 2012 graduate, he played Division I hockey at Boston University, where he earned a B.A. in Communications, before spending more than a decade playing professionally in the NHL, AHL, and international leagues. He brings extensive experience as a player and leader, along with a deep personal connection to St. Sebastian’s, to his new roles on campus. In addition to joining the hockey staff, he will serve as Director of Alumni Engagement in the Advancement Office.

“Having had the privilege of coaching Danny early on at St. Seb’s, I saw firsthand what made him special,” McCann said. “He possessed great skill and a high hockey IQ, but even more impressive was his innate leadership. He led by example, set the tone with his work ethic, and brought people together seamlessly.”

Danny’s personal history with the school and deep love for St. Sebastian’s make him a natural fit to carry the program forward. Please join us in thanking Jed for his extraordinary service to Arrows hockey and welcoming Danny back to St. Sebastian’s.
