Community
Service
Students
are also challenged to practice their faith, and this happens through the
various
Community Service Opportunities at St. Sebastian's. Students
in all Religion classes, through the
Religion Service Program, are
given the option of completing community service instead of taking the midterm
or final exam. Students who avail themselves of this option must work at
a non-profit organization that directly serves people in need; examples
are hospitals, nursing homes, schools, homeless shelters, and programs serving
the mentally and/or physically challenged. The student's teacher must approve
the placement, and the student's supervisor must submit a formal evaluation.
In addition to the hourly requirement (10 hours per semester in the Middle
School and 15 hours per semester in the Upper School), students must also
complete a lengthy reflection paper on their service experience. Seniors
at St. Sebastian's participate in a much more intensive community service
program,
Senior Service, in the two months prior to graduation. There
are also countless other community service opportunities available to students
through the National Honor Society and the Arrow Club, as well as through
a variety of grade level activities and extra-curricular organizations.
