Baseball

The Philosophy
The baseball program strives to further the mission of St. Sebastian’s by encouraging its players to grow in body, mind, and spirit. Our emphasis is on using baseball to instill the ideals of teamwork, hard work, and fair play.

The Program

The baseball program consists of four teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Third, and Fourth.  Each team is coached by at least two full-time faculty.  There are no cuts outside of the Varsity level and each player will be given the opportunity to play.  The Varsity team competes in the competitive sixteen team Independent School League (ISL).

The baseball team is one of the most successful teams at the School.  It has suffered only five losing seasons in its sixty-three years of existence.  St. Sebastian’s has won the League three times, including the 2007 season, since the present ISL was formed in 1980 and has finished second four times.

Arrows standout and current University of Vermont player Matt Duffy (’07) was the League’s Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year for the 2007 season.  St. Sebastian’s has sent many others on to play at college, including three who captained their respective teams in the Ivy and Patriot Leagues.  Mike Smith (’96) has pitched for the Blue Jays and is currently in the St Louis organization.

In 2007, St.Sebastian’s was blessed with the addition of a new FieldTurf® baseball field to complement our existing natural grass field.  This new field increases our ability to play and practice at times when a natural grass field would be unusable due to weather.  The two fields together enable us to play multiple games simultaneously and offer us increased flexibility when scheduling both games and practices.
