English 11
In the eleventh grade, students undertake the study of American literature from the precolonial to the modern period. Class discussion and written assignments will consider American themes including race, freedom, individuality, and the family. Works studied include: Douglas, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, An American Slave; Erdrich, Tracks; Faulkner, Go Down Moses; Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby; Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter; Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms; Johnson, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man; Miller, Death of a Salesman; O'Connor, The Complete Stories; Sound and Sense, An Introduction to Poetry; and Vocabulary for the College-Bound Student.
