At this level a thorough foundation in grammar as well as a facility in writing well-organized paragraphs and short papers is assumed. Reading in different literary modes continues while emphasis is placed on developing a critical perspective. Written assignments focus on the consideration of character and theme in literature. Works studied include: Achebe, Things Fall Apart; May, Fiction's Many Worlds; Miller, The Crucible; Shakespeare, Macbeth; Sophocles, Antigone, Oedipus Rex; Twain, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Vocabulary Workshop, Level F; and Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Other Writings.
